: I'm an admirer of the great Boeing 747,and I
: have flown many miles with a few Pan
: American jets in my day,as a businessman to
: and from Europe.Names like "Clipper
: Bostonian,Clipper Kit Carson,and Clipper Red
: Jacket",all ring a bell,because they
: are just a few of the ones I have been on.I
: remember, however, that these planes all had
: no more than three upper deck windows on
: either side of the fuselage, and later on,as
: development progressed,there were multiple
: windows.My question is,were the three upper
: deck windows surrounded by solid alminium
: sheeting,or did some of these early jets
: have multiple holes in the upper deck
: already,yet closed with aluminium
: sheeting, just in case the customer would
: want multiple windows there later?I wonder
: about this because I saw some planes (non
: Pan Am)at airports during the 70s,which had
: three windows at one time, and about nine or
: ten the next. Thanks for your help.

: Hi Jack i read your comments very interesting question. As a former 747 pilot many years back and when PAN AM an other airlines ordered the almighty 747-100 jet from Boeing in 1968 such as our PAN AM TWA AIR CANADA AMERICAN AIRLINES AN BOAC (BRITISH OVERSEAS AIRWAYS CORPERATION) now British Airways. When PAN AM placed the order for the first 25 747-100 jets Boeing had designed the airframe with only three port hole cabin windows on the upper deck or the capsule as the pilots would call it. There wern't any spare window holes made or fitted to these jets in that era and that the soild alminuim structure or sheets were seal together. How ever Jack in 1972 some of the PAN AM jets were given extra port hole windows to them for future development these jets were eventually scrapped and the work was never carried out . The first of the Boeing 747-123 jets which N737PA,N742PA, N755PA, N740PA were fitted out by Boeing but never installed into these planes. Today some of the former PAN AM jets still active and flying about have had the window on the upper deck put in place. Other ailiners followed this with there jets later in 1974. When the next series 747 200 version rolled out of Boeing the airlines around the world stopped work or refits on the older 747-100 jets as the 200 seres jet had five or more windows each side of the upper deck. I hope this helps with your answers. Thank you
