: Hi Liam i can help you a little with our PAA ladie N743PA. Unfortunaley she is now scrapped her last operator was TOWER AIR who aquired her after the demise of PAN AM. N743PA was named Clipper Derby and entered service with PAN AM in 1970. Her c/n was 19650/24 while she was in service with PAN AM she was leased for six months in the early seventies to American Airlines then she was returned repainted to her PAN AM colour scheme she was then renamed Clipper Black sea. When she bacame a Tower Air jet her rego then was N617FF now this ex PAA rego belongs to another airline operating with this rego.
In 1979 after a few bad accidents with the DC-10 jets and the groundings PAN AM was put into red alert action for airlines stranded who used the DC-10 jets. Air New Zealand did charter a PAN AM 747-123 jet but this wasn't N743PA this was the regular jet on this long haul Pacific route Called Clipper Neptunes Car now also scrapped at Marina Pinal Park N742PA C/N 196491/18 which was the sister aircraft to N743PA. Qantas had there own fleet of 747-238 jets. I can say there were many charter flights made by PAN AM from airlines around the world and some of our 747's 747sp jets L1011'A were pulled from maintance to be used to cover the stranded airliners with passengers. At that time Liam PAN AM was put to it's limits but helped other airliners as well as managing there own daily flights without disruptions or flight cancellations. I hope this info helps you out. Than you
Regards
