At the time of the sale, Pan Am needed a MAJOR cash infusion. They were literally fighting for their life at this point after grossly over paying for National Airlines. Pan Am did reduce domestic service, almost to the level it was in the pre-National days.
The Pacific deal also included the pilots of the aircraft, which would never be repeated in any other route sale.
As for the planes, United got 18, 747SPs, 747-100s, 6 Lockheed L-1011s, and a single DC-10.
Could something have been done to save the Pacific from being sold? I would guess that Pan Am probably shouldn't have aquired National, at least for the price they paid, that burden seemed to cause a lot of their problems in the 80s. But it was well known they had problems even before that.
Sadly, it was just the perfect storm for a struggling airline. Over capacity, high fuel prices, terrorism, negative publicity, less than favorable goverment regulation of routes, and major financial burdens, all rolled together.

: Hello there PANAMAIRS and former staff of PAN
: AM who visit this site daily. I use to love
: this extrodairy airline of exllence and can
: i say it was a pleasure being on board PAN
: AM flights and getting to meet the cabin
: crew and pilot on some domestic and
: international flights I travelled on. My
: queiry relates back to the sale of the PAN
: AM 747 aircraft and DC-10 jets beofore the
: fall of PAN AM .Why on earth did PAN M sell
: out its Pacific routes and Asia routes
: including 747sp jets and the 747s and DC-10
: jets. I think this was the wrong move which
: could have save the airline by cutting back
: its fleet by storing jets and dis continuing
: small non profitable routes in the PAN AM
: domestic area. I felt the biggest impact
: would have being on the trans Atlantic
: routes JFK/LDN PAN AM were making ground on
: the long haul Pacific routes which would
: have benefit the airline. Another great way
: would have being to axe this PAN AM frequent
: flyer programe or suspend it until the
: airline gained ground. Frequent flyer
: programs cost millions and can cost the
: airline or even send it hurtling towards the
: ground if its not carefully looked at. This
: is one of the main reasons behined the
: collapse of such a great airline. Yet
: looking at the date of sales or aircraft
: disposals wern't paid out properly after UAL
: got hold of alot of the jets then they
: disposed of them a few years after the
: collapse of PAN AM. Obvously the PAN AM
: management didn;t care and they are most to
: blame for the financial burden and the
: collapse of PAN AM If they would have looked
: into restructuring they would be sill around
: today. Any comments please put them on this
: board. Many thanks
