: Hi Bill one of the reasons behind the take over was due to our PAN AM wanting to get into the competition with other carriers to compete with the domestic market as PAN AM was mainly International They aquired the DC10 jets from National as they were economical at the time and were very advanced in there flight instruments. National Airlines was not profitable and losing ground mainly passenger wise and couldn't afford to continue with service. PAN AM had signed off the deal and made the take over bid and also had taken on staff from National Airlines. Many of the other aircraft were sold or stored and there fate sealed with the scrap man. Even though PAN AM was in financial trouble they thought it would help release the burden of debit by buying out the DC 10 for older replacement aircraft of PAN AM due to retire from the fleet and to gain ground within America. Unfortunatley that came to a quick end after the PA103 N739PA 747 incident over Lockerbie. I can say the airline was bleeding or hurting not only from that loss but it was mainly its management that took the wrong steps and brought the airline to the ground. Mind you the NATIONAL AIRLINES colours look pretty in on the DC 10 jets. Go to www.airliners.net click on DC 10 National Airlines will show up then follow there fleet rego etc. Thank you
