Hi Rich,
After doing extensive research on your question, I narrowed it down to only four aircraft. Probability points out to your mom flying in a DC3 from Auckland, NZ to San Francisco in 1946. This aircraft was used extensively after World War II.

: Hello everyone,
:
: What aircraft was Pan Am flying from
: Auckland, NZ to San Fran, CA in October
: 1946?
:
: My Mum, an Australian war bride, emigrated
: to the USA in October 1946 from Australia.
: As she remembers her journey, Pan Am was not
: flying from Sydney, Australia. She remembers
: flying in a flying boat from Sydney Harbor
: to Auckland, possibly operated by QANTAS.
: Then, she flew Pan Am from NZ to USA. She
: can't quite remember the stops across the
: Pacific, and now from time to time her story
: gets confused, but she does remember
: stopping along the way from NZ to USA. This
: was the first ever flying she had ever done!
:
: Once she arrived in San Fran, she traveled
: by train to Philadelphia where she met up
: with my Dad. They had met in January 1944 in
: Sydney while he was serving as an American
: GI in the South Pacific. They were happily
: married from Nov 46 until Feb 92 when my Dad
: passed away.
:
: Any info you all can share with me will be
: greatly appreciated!
:
: Thanks & Cheers,
: Rich
