By 1985 they had already sold off many valuable assets and were preparing to sell off the Pacific division to United, greatly reducing the need for more 747's. Pan Am was also investing in the new Airbus A300/310 aircraft.
I agree though, the Pan Am name would have looked stunning on a 747-400. As well as a 767-200 and the 777.
