: Hello,everyone.I have a question about the 747
: aircraft:After the original 121's,and SP's
: were bought,Pan Am also bought quite a few
: other used 747's during the late 70s,and
: 80s,like the 122,123,and the 212's.Even
: halfway through the eighties, when the
: financial trouble really started to get
: big,they bought more jets.Why so?My other
: question is,were any real
: "replacements" bought for the
: destroyed Clippers N752,736,738,and 739 PA
: aircraft? Thank you.

Hello there Frank I read your comments alot of people have had the same idea's as you and the questions about our PAA aircraft fleet. The main reason for replacement was even in the finacial troubled times PAN AM was looking to replace the older 747's 121, 123 and decided to by the 212B"s from other carriers suh as SINGAPORE AIRLINES and a few from UAL but some how other orders were cancelled. Alot of our PAA aircraft were very well used and some unfortunatley in poor condition which ment more money and time spending refurbishing the older jumbo's It was not so much the case about the 747's that perished over the years such as Clipper Maid, CLIPPER VICTOR CLIPPER DEFENDER or other different type aircraft which crashed such as the 707,727's I might add PAN AM had plenty of aircraft to replace those one's lost even though the jet age era was getting more advanced in the past up till today so airliners decide weather or not it's viable to retire the jets or spend the money upgrading them fully or to buy second hand jets ell maintained by good airliners that look after there aircraft. So PAN AM decided to take that step bu retiring these older Jumbo aircraft to the storage facilities knowing full well they wouldn't get there moneis worth from the sale to what ever cargo or third party airliner would pay to write off the debit to the financial company who owned them. Unfortunatley after the collapse of PAN AM the financial companies were left in the red with money owing on them and had to quickly re lease them or write off the debits. Now as for the 747sp jets they were in good condition and UAL decided to buy them out right from PAN AM which the sale went through and by 1986 PAN AM had no 747sp aircraft in the fleet but by then they were scrapped at Majove and other storage facilities. If you want further info Frank please email to me or my good friend Mark who can help you further. Thank you
