Posted by Walt - Lake Placid, Fla. Either the bird cage enclosure the palm is in will have to be modified (option 1) in some way to accomodate the palm, or the palm will have to be relocated (option 2), or the palm would have to be cut down and destroyed (option 3). I would suspect that if the palm is to be relocated the bird cage would have to be disassembled to remove the palm. I checked what the standard practices for the field digging and relocating of field grown palms is in Florida (your palm would be considered field grown). The recommended minimum root ball size for a palm as you described is 10" radius over the trunk caliper (i.e., say if your trunk is 12 inches in diameter, you would want a root ball diameter of 32 inches). The minimum depth of the root ball should be 18 inches. The more root ball the better but you will need heavy equipment to lift it. If you type in "transplanting palms" on your browser you should find some websites with specific info you are looking for. It might be a better option to relocate the bird cage enclosure or do away with it altogether. Walt --Previous Message--

What did they mean by "stop?" The palm must keep growing (replacing old fronds as they die) to survive.
: I have a beautiful triangle palm that
: was planted in the ground inside a
: birdcage screen enclosure. After 5
: years it has grown to push against the
: roof of the 15' birdcage. The base of
: the tree is about 5' and each new
: leaf reaches the ceiling before it
: unfolds.
: Right now the leaf folds over when it
: hits to ceiling before it opens. My
: concern is that it will outgrow the
: space
: or push out the mesh panel in the
: screen.
: When I originally planted it the
: nursery told
: me that the plant would sense when it
: grew up to the roof of the enclosure
: and stop, but that hasn't happened yet.
: Does anyone know if this is true?
: Should I
: transplant it? If I should transplant
: it,
: how deep is the root system? Any help
: would be appreciated.
