Posted by Darell-East Texas This is too weird! I have been looking at real estate property on the Texas coast for the last several weeks! I have been looking at Sargent, Freeport, Palacios, and other areas even near Lake Jackson. Did you guys build a home there or buy one? Are you on the water or close to it? Is your house on stilts? If the soil is clay, you can amend it with some gypsum or gravel. Also, you can add mulch to the soil as well. You may want to put a bed of mulch at the bottom of each hole you dig so the root system can drain better. This is so cool! I have been looking in the very same area you are in to purchase land or a lot to put a small weekend house on. --Previous Message--

Robin,
: Hi Darrell - we just bought 3 Mexican
: Palms for a vacation home we have in
: Sargent, Texas (Gulf Coast). I know
: they are hardy - is there any trick to
: growing? The nursery I bought them
: from said to water well once a week and
: to trim the yellow leaves off so that
: new ones will appear. The soil is very
: clay-like - anything special I need to
: do? Any other hints?
:
: Thanks,
: Robin

: Tammy,
:
: It is perfectly normal for Mexican Fan
: palms to have the hairy cotton type
: threads on them. They will always have
: that-even when they reach heights of 20
: + feet-which they will reach sooner
: than you ever thought.
:
: Sometimes the leaves will shread a
: little-they do that too. If the tips of
: the leaves look burned or brown-you can
: trim off the dead ends with scissors.
: As new leaves open from the center of
: the tree-they will shred (sort of) as
: the fan opens to form a "V"
: shape in between the leaves.
:
: I would not get rid of them. Give them
: plenty of water and when you plant
: them, make sure they have good drainage
: under the rootball.
:
: If you guys want to email me you are
: welcome to do so.
: darellkjones@yahoo.com. I am not a
: Mexican Fan palm expert but I have 6 of
: them in various sizes growing
: wonderfully and I will be glad to
: attach pictures of mine and any info
: that I have.

: HI,
:
: My husband just recently brought home
: two mexican palm trees from Home Depot
: and they are about 3 feet tall. My
: question is the palms are (how can I
: describe this) hairy (It looks like
: white and very curly) It look like the
: leaves are shedding. I even took them
: back to Home Depot, but they informed
: me that is how they came in. They look
: horrible! I was thinking about getting
: rid of them and I know I would regret
: it if I did. Does anyone have any
: ideas??????
