Don't lift your seeds from a strange tree. There are so many types of dates out there (and I've tasted them all). The only one worth growing is the Medjool. It is by far the best tasting and most succulant of all. Just buy a pack of fresh dates and you'll have the pleasure of eating and growing the trees. I have 500 baby trees and 500 in germination right now. I'm addicted to dates and I love the beauty of the trees. You won't be able to grow them outdoors there in the UK, but you'll still have the best of the best in your home / garden.
There will be about 50 dates / seeds in a two lb. pack of dates. Germinate them all and grow them for potted plant gifts to your friends. The plants would be very expensive to buy and make a great gift.
I'm in Phoenix, Arizona and I'm going to plant a medjool plantation.
: hi everyone.

: that seems to work and i have trawled
: the net and seen no mention of it
: i live in England so i dont have the
: luxuary of a humid hot climate so i,m
: forced to grow my palms in a more
: controlled enviroment.
: i,ve managed to germinate 2 varietys of
: "trachys" and a date palm.
: the method i,ve been using is to put
: them in self watering propogators on
: top of my water tank, make sure the drip
: tray has boiled water gone cold in
: it-put the lid on and leave it alone.
: i have had a 95% success rate doing

: well pleased with myself.
: but this is where i need help.
: i have put the germinated seeds into a

: in 2/3 weeks and a date palm which is
: unidentified at the moment as i took
: the seeds directly from a palm tree in
: marbella whilst on holiday
: there(naughty i know-sorry).
: my question is how long can i expect to
: wait before i see some above ground
: the germinated seeds have a single root
: about 1 inch long and have been placed
: in multi purpose compost in a warm
: dry/dark place at a min temp of 15c to
: max 27c.
: with a humidity of around 70%max and
: 22% min.
: all help and advice most welcome.
