Sounds like it may have been caused by moisture being caught behind the wrap. I'm assuming you kept the tree wrapped all winter. It's really not necessary to keep them wrapped all winter, only when the temps are going to drop below freezing for an extended period of time. On nicer/warmer winter days (above freezing) it's good to unwrap the tree and let it breath a little.
