If its growing suckers then its not a Canary Island Palm, it may be a hybrid (most specimens are hybrids) with a true date palm or a senegal date palm. I believe you can continue to cut the suckers off when they sprout as this is what one does with the other date palm species but there is no way to stop new ones from growing.
