Most flushing Cycads require a lot of energy to produce a new flush of leaves. The energy is stored in the Caudex and as the Cycad gets larger and produces bigger flushes, it requires more energy to produce each flush, so flushes may become less frequent. Trimming old fronds can help to produce larger flushes, but should only be done when your Cycad is in a regular cycle of flushing, so that you can trim the fronds prior to the next expected flush. The best way to encourage a flush is lots of feeding. A good Cycad fertilizer can promote quite reasonable growth in even the slowest growing Cycads.
