Sounds like it may have been a seed pod. No, you don't need to trim the lower fronds to make new ones come out. If your big ball was indeed a seed pod, new fronds would not emerge from there anyway. In general, it is best to only trim when the fronds are completely dead (no green left) as any green contributes to photosynthesis. Hope this helps some.
