Mexican Fan Palms

I planted 3 small (trunks less than 24" tall) Mexican Palms last fall. I wrapped the trunks during the winter to protect from the cold. The fronds on two (and most of the third) have turned complety brown - is this normal? If they survived teh winter do they have to be trimmed?
