Not sure where you are located but if you normally only experience a few days below freezing each winter.... i would take the blanket off and place it back on the next cold spell.
As far as the older palms fronds turning brown, if it is the lower fronds that is normal and you can cut them off. If they have browned due to burning because of the freeze, i would leave them on until next spring before trimming them. You know i just realized that you said you planted the palm in September, was it balled and burlapped or was it a potted palm? If it was balled and burlapped you should cut most of the fronds off anyway, in order to facilitate the formation of a new root system. Good luck.
