Well, you're going to get another opinion outta me
. I live nearby in Arlington. I planted palms in my yard (over 6 years ago) that i wouldn't have to worry about during the winter. I have only lost one so far, and i think that was due to the drought more than anything. There are many palms that will do well here year round without having to baby them throughout the winter months. Do nothing to the Windmill Palm and the Mexican Fan Palm. With a severe enough cold snap, i.e. staying below freezing for more than a couple days, with temps dipping below 15 degrees at times, you "may" lose them all. I say "may" because your Windmill Palm might pull through and maybe... just maybe, the Mexican Fan could to, but that's less likely as it isn't as hardy. You need to go with a true California Fan Palm, they are hardier. Many of them are labeled wrong at the nurseries so know the difference. The Pygmy Date Palms will ultimately croak no matter what you do, they are not cold hardy enough to live here. Best bet on them is to pot them up and bring them inside in the winter and keep them in the pots from now on. Try to find some Pindo Palms, Needle Palms, Sabal minor, Mediterranean Fan Palms, Saw Palmetto, or Sabal Mexicana and check them out. They will need no protection here in the winter. No guarantee that they will live forever, but your chances are going to certainly be better with these types. Good luck.

: We live in Dallas and had a backyard
: landscaped this year and added a
: variety of palms. We've spoken to our
: landscaper and several others and thier
: opinions and suggestions vary. We have
: windmill palms, pigmy date palms, and
: some very large mexican fan palms. My
: question is how do I care for them in
: the event of severe cold weather that
: sometimes North Texas is prone to? When
: it starts to get cold, do I trim the
: fronds back? Do I wrap all the trees in
: burlap?? Any advice would be greatly
: appreciated.
