Trimming Canary Island Dates

I live in Jensen Beach, FL and three years ago, planted a fairly large Canary Island Palm tree in the front yard. The tree appears healthy and has survived hits by 3 category 3 hurricaines so far, but it doesn't seem to want to be a tree. It's more like a bush, about 18"-22" diameter, including the apparently dead cut-off branches around the base, but it doesn't seem to want to grow any higher. It's got a beautiful drop of fronds that my wife says, "Cut off to the vertical," but that doesn't leave many fronds and makes the bush seem very skimpy. Any recommendatons?
