Mexican fan fronds snapping

I have two mexican fans in my back yard. Both are about 12 ft tall. One is doing excellent. The other has recently started have the the fronds snap and bend at the trunk. It has several green fronds that are bent down like a dead frond.
I have noticed that it has added about 6" of growth at the top of the trunk and now there is a noticable difference in the diameters. The old part of the trunk is about 18" round where the new 6" growth is only about 6" round.
Otherwise it appears to be heathly.
Should I be concerned?
