If they are indeed Mexican Fan Palms then the root system will not be the same, but will definitely be entangled. It shouldn't be a problem removing some of the smaller palms from around the larger ones. Just be careful to do as little damage as possible. Use common sense when digging the smaller ones out, the larger palms will be able to tolerate some root damage with no ill effects. Get as much root as you can on the smaller ones.
: I recently bought a house that has four
: good sized Mexican fan palms growing up
: next to the house. They all are
: growing from the same root system. In
: addition, there are approximately 20
: small palms growing out of the base of
: the larger palms. Is there any way to
: divide out the small palms so that I
: can transplant them or do I risk
: damaging the larger palms? I think
: that the root system is the same for
: all of the palms.
