Biblically speaking, I would say the same spirit or one of his minions who convinced Eve that she could become like God if she would just eat the forbidden fruit. Who is also the same one who convinced Cain that he could remove his embarrassment by S.S.S (Smack'im in the head, Shovel his remains into a hole and cover it up and Shut up about it) his brother Able.
The same ones who have fed the fires of greed, hatred and distrust since the Garden.
