I wasn't there for the insertion but I know the guy had it in a double ended wire trap. Like this one: http://www.bestnest.com/bestnest/RTProduct.asp?SKU=HAV-1030
He was using it to trap squirrels that were damaging the display bird feeders he was selling. He had it baited with sunflower seeds and peanuts.
Now this is pure conjecture on my part but what I would try is to slip the trouser leg over the head end of the trap and then "encourage" the critter to seek the "safety" of the dark hole. A spray of water or a pointed stick properly applied might work the required encouragement.
