Louki noticed the wings first. The huge, batlike appendages were like nothing he'd ever seen in his own homeland, several weeks’ journey to the east. But if there was anything he'd learned during his forty-eight hours in Wolf Mountain, it was that this place was far, far from home. And not just in the literal sense.
Louki dipped his muzzle in casual greeting, keeping his one good eye fixed on those of the alpha male. "I take it, from your welcoming attitude," he said, in the slow, sardonic droll of one who is too disillusioned with life to bother with pleasantries, "that you are accepting new members?"
It was a long shot, he knew, especially considering that the alpha's greeting was anything but welcoming. But Louki knew better than to be daunted by hubris alone; he’d known plenty of wolves who could offer nothing but big words and impressive stature, but when it came to wisdom, wit, and willingness to lead, they fell deplorably short. Louki had yet to see into which category this alpha male fell.
Louki tried, in vain, to suppress a shudder; his fur wasn't nearly so thick as Taboo’s, and provided precious little protection from the chill winter wind. Very smooth, Louki, my boy, he reprimanded himself, that's just what you want to do: show the alpha just how much of a puling pup you are.
He knew he did not strike a particularly imposing image -- his ears were in shambles, torn at such precise intervals that the tears seemed almost intentional, and his feathery grey fur revealed no hint of the musculature that Taboo possessed –- but his calm composure and unflagging gaze compensated for his physical shortcomings. His voice, too, held a sort of aplomb that stood at odds with his thin, lanky frame.
