Louki's spirits had risen considerably since his arrival in Wolf Mountain. He had discovered the remains of rabbit carcass buried deep in the snow, and though he suspected it was well over a week old, the frigidity had kept it, while not exactly fresh, perfectly edible. It was not the hot, steaming deer carcass of his dreams, but it was nevertheless the most satisfying meal he'd had in weeks.
Thanks to the rabbit, and two more half-frozen carcasses he discovered since, he wasn't as emaciated as he had been when he first stumbled upon the mountain. Where he was once haggard and wasted, he was now lean and sinewy, his tattered coat beginning to resume its characteristic sheen. His rumpled fur was the feathery grey of a week-old pup, but it was clear that he was much older: the jagged cicatrice that ran from the corner of his jowls to the base of his cheekbone attested to a life that had had its share of hardships.
Indeed, exiled from his former pack, shunned by his parents and his siblings as an incorrigible disgrace to their kind, he had been forced to wander these foreign lands for months, searching for somewhere more accepting of his... eccentricities.
As Louki padded along, the mountainous terrain gradually levelled, the dense foliage thinning until he found himself loping through a flat, barren field. The transition didn't surprise Louki; though usually filled with livestock, houses, and other indications of human settlement, he had passed many such fields in his wanderings. Usually, he avoided farmlands whenever possible: but he saw none of the two-legged, rifle-toting beasts he often associated with such terrain, and took this as an indication of relative safety.
And hey, he thought, somewhat flippantly, if I'm wrong, it's not like it'll be the first time.
