Hardware is the essence of my studios (2 which are private). Nothing out can replace the power and sound of an E-mu for overal synthesis, sampling edits, and sound library quaility. Sequencers are for fine edits of midi of song structure- then recording of the tracks are recorded separately for kik, snare, hats, bass, lead, stabs, etc. onto another pc or mac also a hardisk recorder. This yields the ultimate source material for mixdown. Knobs are awesome but, I tire of the cramped studio and after a while just sample the edited patches to the E-mu and sell the synths (such I have done with my nord 2, supernova 2, Jp 8000, and other modules). It's a good practice, and perhaps one day a software will have the "balls" of hardware. What sampler are you using that may die?
peace,
the mantis
