I disagree re: the logo, but I'm not going to go into it. Actually, I will: Think about ALL the ways in which you could write the word "volumes", then look at those two logos and tell me there's not a similarity. Then, if you're still not convinced, block with your hands the "v" and the "s", see that the middle of the words are connected in the exact same way, then look at the fact that in both logos the "v" and the "s" are bigger than the other letters, have more elaborate curves, longer lines, etc. No, they're not facsimiles, but there is an obvious influence.
Regarding the rest of your post, I know you're trying to be helpful, but it doesn't help to talk down to us as though nobody else knows as much about these topics as you do. This is not a post about copyrighting your compositions. As for trademarking a name, while I'm sure there are many people here familiar with the option to do so, most people don't have the money to spend on something like that. (Additionally, I don't think its applicable in this case: if the reading I've done in the past is any indication, you can't trademark a one-word name, unless that word wasn't already in common use, or was a word created for the identity you're looking to protect.) In my situation, I believe I could have trademarked (and copyrighted) my logo, and then taken the band to task for that, but I can probably take them to task for that, anyway. And, this isn't about identity theft, its about MySpace's shifty decision to reassign a URL without letting one of the two parties involved protest the change.
