For whatever reason, "build your own website" stuff hasn't really gone very far in the past couple years, as far as I know. It's still sorta "hard".
What has moved forward, are blogs.
And by blog, I guess I mean a site that is oriented towards chronological addition of entries.
"Oriented" is the key word. While a wordpress site has features that are aimed at making it easy to make a typical blog, you can arrange it in any number of ways.
What also has moved forward are content management systems, software that allows you to push around pieces on your site, and not do any coding. Wordpress is in fact a flavor of CMS, it just happens to like to manage text, and favors chronology. Joomla is a pretty easy CMS, still waay more complex than wordpress.
Lastly.. there are more/better "hosted" solutions than in the past. barry.wordpress.org would be an example of a hosted site. Your information is on their computers, running their software. Alternately, you can also download their software, and run it on your own site. Using hosted services is easier, but less flexible. They give you less options, just because it wouldn't be worth it to give you all the options that are available.
Myspace is a hosted site. The difference between myspace and wordpress hosted sites.. myspace are assholes, not sure about wordpress. I guess it's mostly in the terms of service agreements, and what their goal is. Wordpress is open-source, software that is worked on by people around the world..
So!
In order of ease, I think:
www.tumblr.com (hosted)
google.com/sites (hosted)
www.wordpress.org (hosted)
www.movabletype.org (own server)
wordpress (own server)
moveabletype (own server)
free joomla site (hosted)
joomla (own server)
i'm sure i'm missing like a MILLION options
Only sites that are on YOUR paid server can be really totally said to be yours, and even then.. you're renting someones computer! Hosted sites are easier to make secure, because you don't have to deal with doing updates and patches to the software to deal with discovered security flaws.
You can use vimeo, drop.io, etc.. to store media, and link it to your blog.
