It's easy enough to say we shouldn't be there. But perhaps it's more complicated than that? I think if you look at all "developed, modern, democratic, 1st world" (whatever you wanna call it) countries. Their history involves a sordid mixture of strong home grown and foreign influences.
I feel like following what's going on in Afghanistan is a way to learn and reflect up our own country's difficult political process. But I don't know as much as I'd like about it and I'd love to get people's input. I feel what most people fail to want to admit is that democracy and stuff like that has always been a long messy business.
Our system is not perfect here. But I think we can agree that a system that imprisons men for shaving or treats women as 2nd class citizens is not so great either. One might argue that democracy's biggest failure is how complacent it has made us. But how much do we owe it to others, just on a human rights level, to help bring people out of severe poverty and social repression?
