Whether it's his intelligence, skin color, his speaking skills or the laughably high expectations he set for himself in 2008--or a combination of these--many people who voted for Obama seemed to act as if they were voting for a political anomaly. The enthusiasm that everyone felt when an intelligent black man with idealistic speeches won the presidency was a genuine enthusiasm and a major milestone in our history...we were right to dance in the streets over the idea of Obama. I don't think we have to recant that enthusiasm in order to deal with the actual Obama. The excitement over his election was valid; the anger over many of the decisions he has made during the first nine months are also valid. We're not dealing with a political savior fighting against a corrupt and entrenched political system. I think we're dealing with an intelligent, well-meaning politician who wrestles with some parts of the system and embraces others. Years from now we may look at the Obama presidency as a positive, productive one, but that doesn't mean he isn't in danger of a Bay of Pigs-ish blunder.
