I basically agree with Barry.
As for change, I agree with Beau, although with some differences--public opinion causing people to do what? And going where?
Also I'm not sure the 1992 example is so good--the change there was caused by a whole constellation of circumstances, including the actions of the Soviet "military-industrial complex", actions of the US, and conditions of the world economy, as well as public opinion within the USSR. However, exactly because it was "bloodless", a lot of the same people now run Russia pretty much the same way as they used to.
A better example of the power of public opinion to change Russia was the non-bloodless revolution of 1917.
