Posted by Bee K It's tempting to expect some sort of revolutionary presentation from the Beatles, but half the Beatles are dead. All the groundbreaking they did is over and done with...in a way, NOT junking up these releases with a ton of extra crap and compressing the hell out of it--things that ever other reissue seems to do--is revolutionary. Treating a record like a record and not a goodie bag.

I've thought a lot about this. I'd like to see some unreleased stuff out there as well, but I'd rather see it presented in its own separate packaging...the Beatles records should sit on their own without bonus tracks. One thing the Beatles did better than pretty much any artist out is quality control. I cant barely think of more than 4 or 5 songs in their entire catalog that aren't top notch. Tacking demos and alternate takes on to the end of the original records would take away from pretty much flawless catalog that's there. People have been complaining about the lack of bonus tracks, but these arguments are financial in nature ($ saved by the consumer and gained by Apple) or historic (let's dissect the records and study them). But there isn't a good artistic argument for the B Sides and bonus material...perfection should be left as such.
I have the Mono Box set on order (have no problem with the fact that both aren't stuffed on the same disc...again, presentation over value).
So I haven't heard the mono box yet. I started buying the stereo records individually and will pick them up over the next year. I've heard the White Album so far and the difference is very clear. The low end is thicker and the over all sound is richer. Paul's bass on "USSR" jumps out and rips your brain...to get the full effect, i played them both simultaneously, A/B comparison. The '87 CDs sound thin and brittle by comparison. I'm playing them on a good CD player through my $200 Audio Engine speakers...not high end, but good enough. I'll follow this post up once I have a chance to do the headphone test.
Speaking of the Beatles, as I type this Pete Scalzetti is playing instrumental piano medleys of Beatles tunes over old Buster Keaton movies here at the Sidewalk..."Martha My Dear" can be blended with "Blue Jay Way"...who knew?...AWESOME!
