Hi Nan,
It might not answer all your questions but you should probably read that article about the different contracts that you can do, it's very interesting : http://www.wired.com/entertainment/music/magazine/16-01/ff_byrne?currentPage=all
About playing gigs in Europe, I can only tell you about France. The Sacem is the equivalent of the bmi and ascap and I think they have a partnership together. So, when you play a gig in France, make sure to ask the promoters to do the necessary things with the Sacem (they have to contact them before and after the gig) and to fill out a sacem form on the night of the gig (it's a yellow paper on which you will write the songs that you played). The thing is that most small venues don't respect the law because the sacem would take them too much money, so you have to find this out with the promoters. Then make sure that your rights were sent by the sacem to the bmi or the ascap, otherwise they will keep the money. You can look at the Sacem website in English here : http://www.sacem.fr/portailSacem/jsp/ep/language.do;jsessionid=IJuxJ8IZTqYPc9Srlnt64hU2UrU0ZtPPWvVd59DRovppI9QCNoDN!631340893
I hope this makes sense.
Cecile
