As for holding your paycheck, not giving you a earnings statement and the discrepencies in your W-2. Call the IRS hotline and report the problems and the wage discrepency, the IRS will investigate and you may get a percentage of any monies the IRS collects if they determine that the company acted inappropriately.
You may want to contact the state Legal Aid Society or Catholic Charities both have lawyers that work pro bono or on a sliding fee scale.
FYI- In these difficult economic times jobs are getting harder to come by and it with probably remain that way for a while. If you have a drug abuse problem your health insurance through the company may pay for treatment, you should have the option to COBRA the insurance usually for 18 months after you leave the co. 97.196.198.2241. Drug test results are confidential so unless you've been shown the paperwork (a Federal crime) I would not be so sure about the five others. Even if you heard it from the source it could be BS for a good story.
2. If you came up for a random (administered by a third party, not your company) you have to take the test no matter what your boss knows. Otherwise it goes down as a refusal to test with the same consequence.
3. Most companies offer an evaluation and counseling option for a first offense. If you have a prior bust or record of one from another employer, yout toast. Of course, a ####up is always the last know what they are, so they have gotten tired of dropping hints and you gave them the perfect reason to ditch you.
4. If there is a legitimate pay problem you have state and federal resources that are free. Save your lawyer money for bail after a possession charge.
5. (And most important). Put down the ####ing pipe or get out of the business. If you're too immature to make that simple decision, you're too immature to be on a job where others depend on you for their safety. Don't give me the crap about I only smoke on my own time. You're not 100% until your brain drops into final drive a couple months after you quit for good. - Re: Screwed

With the recession and the decrease in work, the contractors will be getting more selective in who they hire and the hiring requirements will only become more stringent. IF diving is what you intend as your career then now is the time for you to get your life back on tract.

Once upon a time recently I worked supv'ing at a large co. where the supt. had been there FOREVER. He is a raging alcholic. This large co. knows this. No, he does not just drink onshore, but OFFSHORE too. Hes a mess in the am, his cabin stinks (I hated going in there to meet with him) his breath stinks, but the Co. looks the other way. Now with that description I bet some of you can guess who this is. Oh, and the lead tender got so (habitually)wasted one night he was ticketed for disturbing the peace and nearly arrested. I breath tested him at the gate (he flipped off the cops as they drove by, I really wanted to slap him for disturbing MY evening!) he failed, was run off with 2 other tenders(his 3rd offense I think) but was back to work about 5 weeks later as he'd been on that boat for 2+ yrs as SOMEONE (?) felt they had no other tender that could replace him and they wanted to break him out soon. Agreed that the guy I bumped to lead was not as good, but as I learned more about this guy, I found through candid talk on deck after he left that he used coke offshore too. He did seem really hyped up when he first came on shift- when I thought about it; asking should I do this, that and the other until I booted him out of dive control. BUT...he was back again after " alcohol treatment" but really due to friends higher up.
You hate mongers need to look hard in the mirror and ask how many times you tie one on when the vessel hits the beach? I have seen MANY MANY times dive crew of all positions come aboard after nailing hookers in Dudai ,Trinidad,Mexico,Aberdeen, and every port at 4am when their shift starts at 0600! They are still drunk and have not slept and they go on shift and its tolerated in this industry! Where I come from that is called a double standard. Booze is way worse than weed. Crack, Meth, Extasy, etc. are zero tolerance.
I agree if you bring any non-precribed meds offshore you are asking for it, and are a danger to MY divers. BUT...that supt I mentioned above...do you think he tells the medic he brought 2 gallons of vodka aboard? He used to try to force the hard decisions on me...so if it all went to shit, he'd not have fingers pointed at him. Sly drunk eh? And whos going to question him anyways-hes the supt.!
Bottom line is drinking is a huge problem in this biz and the worst offenders are the Brits, followed by every other western european whitey.

Personally, I vote for the latter.
I agree with your references to alcohol abuse within the industry. But chronic use of weed is not harmless either.
However the defining factor between the use of alcohol and weed may well come down to the fact that one is legal and one is not.
Employers may test employees randomly for use of illegal drugs and under the law may fire an employee for failing a drug test. But the use of prescription drugs and alcohol is another can of worms for employers. - Re: Throwing Stones

24.17.12.26I don't know about you dive diva (or anyone else for that matter), but our nation, as a people and as a nation, have had many many freedoms taken from us via legislation (good or bad) since 9/11.
I do not relish more retrictions on my behavior (no, I'm not a screw-ball loony) as i self regulate quite well, thank you. But, the white haired rich guys in board rooms, the senate and congress make decisions frequently that directly or indirectly have bearing on my life. The days where you could say we had a good system of checks and balances is over. (now we just dumb down to the lowest common denominator, and unfortunately, there seem to be a lot of low denominators out there...
So, the refrain "land of the free, home of the brave" may soon have to be reduced to just "the home of the brave" as I for one can say whole heartedly that since I was a kid, we have FAR FEWER freedoms than we used to have and the 10's of billions spent on the "war on drugs" has made absolutely no difference. Don't you all think its time to re-think our approach maybe as the status quo meter is reading zero. No, i take that back, we are in the negative and sinking fast.

The one pair of dress boots I own does have 3 inch heels, but I still prefer the 5 inch stilettos.
And when your hair is as long as mine the only way to get it inside any helmet (its a Carson on my cdiver pic not a SL-37) is to braid it, coil it around my head and pin it up to keep it in place.
And I do read alot while using the bike, treadmill or stair climber at the gym.
Guess I need to toss out the linen suits and cashmere sweaters and invest in a burka and nijab. I certainly don't want to give spiny chills, lol ~ Diva
