Anyone who has worked overseas...or not, knows Australia is a closed shop. More than ANYWHERE- period.
2 of our majors, Exxon and Chevron are starting a mega project there as we speak called "Gorgon".
This will be one of the largest projects ever.
(I know the dude who posted below about unions is a mole trying to expand the membership base of XYZ local, not the case here)
so...check out this article from TODAY 10/30 from an Australian paper. http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/business/story/0,28124,26278137-36418,00.html
Although I do work overseas, what pisses me off to no end is how "our" majors cut costs here any way they can, but knuckle under to Gov.,union, IMCA and public pressure when doing these big overseas projects such as Gorgon. If you've worked the mid east lately you also know what I mean..Exxon puts on a damn near free Pro (all the top players) for the wonderful people of Doha every yr since like 1994. I went. The seats were almost empty. Can you imagine exxon doing that here? Yeah, I know its PR, but that does not make it more palatable.
I want you to note that the Autralians, although it is American companies footing the bills, made it part of the deal that 90% of the contracts be handed to Australian companies, or joint ventures. As the article says, they are pissed that Hyundai got a contract. I ESPECIALLY want you to read the part about the workers "village".
It will have a golf course, swimmings pools (yes, POOLS as in more than one!) and gyms....probably a theater too. This is the same thing I suggested the large companies that operate out of Fouchon do on a post I made about 5 months ago. (after being holed up there 7 weeks one time, I hate that place)
Don't forget...in many ways YOU are paying for the aussies to sun bathe and work out while you rot in Fouchon.
Think about it....just think about it.
