Colored Boston Terriers
The information about them being used for fighting certainly is not new news as that is one of the reasons they were bred, especially at the turn of the century. They were used primarily for baiting the larger dogs and training them as I have read in books of old. Supposedly the markings were perfected to wanting the "desired markings" (not preferred per AKC), of white on the chest to tell the damage that the dogs had done to them. This is also why Boston Terriers are preferred for stealing from people back yards to train pit bulls to full the illegal dog fighting ring. Poorly bred Boston Terrier resemble Pit Bulls, they are smaller obviously and will not do much damage to a large Pit, and you guys know, that once a Boston is pushed so far and begins to fight he will not back down. Again, the markings play a big role in that the damage in training can be seen. Poor Bostons!
NOW what I did find more interesting than the subject as you why you posted this is actually the fact that this Boston Terrier X Bull Terrier mix was DEAF! There is such a problem in Boston breeds, both purebreds and decendants of them. All the more reason why any breeder of Boston Terriers, Olde Boston Bulldogges, anything involving BT blood, HAS GOT TO BE BAER TESTED! I know Wired Kennels is doing it and I commend them. Bostons can be unilaterally deaf (deaf in one ear) and sometimes even the most observant person can miss it because it the dog learns to compensate so well. As the English White Terrier was used rampantly in early BT breeding, and is said to have gone extinct because of the deafness, there is a ton of deafness in the breed and no one knows HOW deafness is passed on. Is it genetic? So it would seem, but no one has been able to pinpoint how it is inherited, as two deaf dogs can have a litter of all hearing dogs and vice versa. Although I never understood why founders of a breed would use a dog they knew to be so "faulty" to intertwine with the creation of their new breed. Could all be hear say, but it is in all of the historical books.
A bit of a ramble there! BUT thanks for the post!
