California Jack recently sent me a copy of his Pit Bull Bible, and one of the interesting topics was feeding raw for cheap. There are two different "recipes" in the book. First is the premium raw diet consisting of 6.4 oz. chicken quarters, 2 oz. chicken hearts or gizzards, 2 oz. chicken livers, one egg (2 oz.), 2 oz. plain yogurt, 1 oz. fish oil, 2 oz. vegetable mix. Current Wal-Mart prices for these ingredients comes to only $1.12 for the 17.4 oz meal. Secondly, is the budget raw diet- which includes 6.4 oz. chicken quarters, 1 cup rice (8 oz.), one egg (2 oz.), 1 oz. plain yogurt, 1 tsp lard (1/6th oz.), and 1/2 of a multi vitamin. This 18.6 oz. meal only costs $0.52. Again, All the prices are current, and everything was purchased at Wal-Mart. Remember, these are larger portions than an OBB would require. I think the recommended raw meal size for a 30lb. dog is closer to 10 oz.! Not too bad. Personally, I switch off between chicken and beef for a little more variety. As a side note, I found an interesting analogy in the book comparing how canines burn fats and carbs differently. It basically says that a dog burns fats like an oil lamp-slowly, evenly, and with little waste. A dog burns carbs like burning a sheet of paper- quickly, hot, and with much waste (smoke, ash=poop
). Anyway, that really clicked for me, and I thought I'd share.
