Roger Palmer bowed out of Athletic in true style. He finally brought down the curtain on his illustrious Athletic career in a Latics reserves game against S####horpe reserves at Boundary Park on 10th May 1993. The reserves won 4-2 and 33 year old Palmer got two goals, one was his trademark near post header, scored from a Mark Brennan centre. His other goal was a spectacular drive from the edge of the box. The reserves were looking for promotion to the Pontins League First Divison and the result left them just 90 minutes away from the top flight. The reserves put out a very strong side for the match: Hallworth, Makin, Barlow, Marshall, Hall, McDonald, Graham, Brennan, Tolson, Palmer and Keizerweerd. Eyre replaced Tolson and Price was an unused sub.
