The Internet gives voice to extreme falsity and extreme truth. Before it was around both extremes were marginal in society; deemed too raw and unfit for mass presentation. An NPA type's rant replete with truth and quality would at best command an audience of a dozen people at work or at the bar. On the flipside batshit conspiratorial drivel and quasi-political gibbering is hoisted to podium prominence, previously being at best a joky subplot on the X-Files or The Simpsons.
We needn't look long for accurate national archetypes. In an era where anything goes, they make themselves known daily:
