Last year we put together a little book entitled: NPA Personality Theory: The Essentials. What was surprising was that the original description of the NPA model hadn't changed. About the only significant difference was the addition of the notion of "temperament". This came about from discussions with my colleague, Jacob Rand, MD, around 1983-84. It was he who suggested the "television set analogy", but it was too late to include the notion of temperament in the original book, which came out in 1985.
