A lengthy but illustrative anecdote, by way of example:
Essentially the stories revolve around poor or oppressive parenting, and the neglect resulting from a parent's selfishness, egoism, or delusions. Stories involving a parent's irrational tantrums, and an atmosphere at home which enables such behavior, are frequent.
Frequently the child of the narcissist is surprised when reaching maturity, realizing that the world is a bigger place, and that their childhood environment was abnormal. In some cases we might think the stories exaggerated or one-sided, however many (particularly concerning individuals with mental health diagnoses, alcohol/drug problems, erratic or bizarre behaviors etc.) ring true.
As for the types described, recall that this is a public message board where personal stories are shared. Most of the contributors describe parents who are NA/NA- or N types, although there is doubtless a minority of NP/NPA individuals.
For those of us with the N trait, this board offers a good, cautionary guide to the pitfalls of the narcissistic character.
