He was certainly loved by Germans, so it makes sense that the N/NP of Germany at that time and for quite a time afterwards was entranced by him. It's hard to know whether the western world views of genius and quality in literature were permanently influenced by the scourge of Nazi era in Germany against German literature. But it seems so. Maybe over time this will change?
The conventional wisdom regarding German intellectual output is genius in their science work but much less so in their other work. That of France (more polymorphous) in contrast would be genius in science as well as in other scholarship. The USA? It may be too soon to say??
