He has the basic parental disagreements with his father (as does Orrie) over the southern way of life. Cooper is all about learning the ways of the north. He builds a ship in Europe and becomes rich from that. He has little contact with his family at Mont Royal. He marries and has 2 children (I think it's 2). He only becomes bitter, judgemental, and mean when his son dies in a shipwreck. He hates Ashton because the ship that wrecked his family was her and Bent's ship from blockading. (The Waterwitch). He blames Ashton for his sons death and will not have anything to do with the Main family. He eventually becomes so depressed from his son's death that he gets mixed up with the wrong crowd, thus bringing us to book 3. --Previous Message--

As the previous fan noted...Charles served under Bent in Texas before the war started. Bent didn't like Charles from the get go, because of his last name. (and the fact that Charles was not one to let people bully him around).
: In the books Bent knew Charles from
: the time Charles serviced in Texas
: and Bent was his Captain. Later Orry
: told Charles about their battleship
: with Bent. In the TV-Series Bent
: learned about Charles by asking
: Constance about family members
: before killing her.
:
: Cooper is not the only person in the
: books not being shown on t.v. His
: whole life story with many dramatic
: changes in him is left out to keep
: the scenes near the main story. The
: way they show Cooper in Series 3 is
: not quite like Cooper in Book 3.
: There he is kind of bitter and still
: hanging on the old ways like
: treating black people - also
: Madeline - like worthless things.
: But he never engages in the K.K.K.
:
: Hope to help you out
