In the books Bent knew Charles from the time Charles serviced in Texas and Bent was his Captain. Later Orry told Charles about their battleship with Bent. In the TV-Series Bent learned about Charles by asking Constance about family members before killing her. Cooper is not the only person in the books not being shown on t.v. His whole life story with many dramatic changes in him is left out to keep the scenes near the main story. The way they show Cooper in Series 3 is not quite like Cooper in Book 3. There he is kind of bitter and still hanging on the old ways like treating black people - also Madeline - like worthless things. But he never engages in the K.K.K.
