HELP: Bent and Charles Main; Cooper Main.

My husband and I just finished watching our new DVD N&S collection. It has been a long time since I read the book III Heaven and Hell. Can someone tell me how in Book III Elkanah Bent knew Charles Main. I assumed Charles would have known about Bent via stories but I don't recall them ever meeting one another in any of the three books??? Please tell me when and where their first meeting occurred. Also: does anyone know anything about Cooper Main. Why was he absent from the first two miniseries and was he always such a mean person?
