Bent barely survived the fire. He suffered permanent burns on his skin. And he was in a hospital for quite some time.
Frankly, I don't see why you blame Book III. The producers of Book II had decided to involve him in an explosion that never happened in the second novel. And John Jakes had written Bent into the plot of Book III.
