Frankly, it makes less sense in the novel, as it does in the miniseries. In the novel, Bent learned from Charles that Madeline was a neighbor of the Mains. He learned the same thing from Huntoon in the miniseries. Yet, in both the novel and the miniseries, he went through a lot of trouble to get his hands on the painting that featured Madeline's mother . . . before he knew that Orry and Madeline were in love.
