Virgilia had been mistakenly accused of killing a wounded Confederate general in a field hospital. She left and made her way to Washington D.C. to seek help from Sam Greene (in the miniseries). He only agreed to help, if she would become his mistress. After she had been his mistress for nearly a year, he revealed that she had been cleared of the murder charges . . . a good time ago. Realizing that Greene had used her, Virgilia killed him in cold blood. She was hung for his murder.
In the novel, Senator Stout had dumped her as his mistress. She became a paid companion for a wealthy socialist in Washington. She eventually left her job, helped the Mains get Mont Royal back from Ashton and married a Northern black.
