None of us seems to like Book III, and I am no exception. It was well below John Jake's ability and the plot really makes no sense. Ashton, after being expelled from the Main family by Orry and divorced by James, should have taken up with another man, then dumped by him, a long way from Mont Royal. After many years of no contact with her family and wandering from man to man, she should have wandered back to rebuilt Mont Royal in, say, 1873 or something, with profuse apologies to the family and to the Hazzards. Remembering how she would scheme and scam, Orry as head of the family on Mont Royal accepts her apologies, but keeps a close watch on her, as would Brett where Billy was concerned. After a few years of good progress, she relapses to the old Ashton and takes up with another evil man like Bent. Orry immediately expells her from Mont Royal, her new beau soon leaves her and she just wanders from man to man till she dies of a bitter, broken heart at, say 57 in about 1891. Thanks to that abortion Maddlyn helped her get, she would never bear a child. She'd get buried in the Mont Royal family cemetary.
