and for the record, whether pen companies do it or not, i have succesfully used flame, and continue to use flame, to open celluloid pen sections. it just requires some 50 cents of common sense and an intuitive knowledge of flame zones. having made alcohol lamps using ink bottles from childhood forth, i claim to have far better knowledge of an alcohol lamp's potential than some stupid heat gun or nozzle-adapted blow drier neither of which i knew existed till i saw scare-mongering by the likes of binder et al. not only do those tools not localize heat well, their very nature of heat makes them difficult to internalize intuitively. i refer to the heat gun sitting idle in my garage, while alcohol lamp sees frequent use. yes, heat guns are idiot-proof, but not effective.
