So far this year, no typhoons have come ashore in Japan. On average, 1.5 typhoons come ashore in Japan each year by the end of August. A total of 12 typhoons had formed by the end of August, slightly below the average of 14, but atmospheric conditions made it difficult for them to come ashore.
"Typhoons usually move around the rim of the Pacific high pressure system, heading toward Japan," said agency forecaster Noriaki Watanabe. "This year the Pacific high was unusually weak over the area near Japan, and the edge of the Pacific high moved away from Japan to the area over the sea to the east. As a result, typhoons didn't move north, but rather moved toward the Chinese continent in many cases."
